Unified Communications

If you are in the IT industry and by any chance look beyond your screen you will see a growing demand for Unified Communications know how. You must be thinking that this has been around for a while but until recently the term "Unified Communications" has grown. Now for all those who don't know, the wiki definition for "Unified Communications (UC) is the integration of real-time communication services such as instant messaging (chat), presence information, Telephony (including IP telephony), video conferencing, call control and speech recognition with non real-time communication services such as unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail, SMS and fax). UC is not a single product, but a set of products that provides a consistent unified user interface and user experience across multiple devices and media types". This last sentence holds the magic of UC, we have had e-mail around for a while for our purposes since the 1980's but it has been around since the 1960's; fax services for much longer what UC does is that it offers all these services as one package.

With UC we no longer have to travel to make that business meeting or product presentation we can telepresence, we can answer our work extension without being at work, we can work from home just as if we were in the office, information between co-workers, vendors and customers can be shared seamlessly ; the benefits are enormous without even considering the monetary conveniences.

I can see all businesses independent of size or revenue using all form or some of the services in UC, it all boils down to quick information and productivity. Hence the outbreak of Smarthphone users, currently about 25 million expected to increase four-fold by 2013. We are a generation of information, we need our email 24/7, browse on the internet on our phone while we are in line, listen to the radio while we are on the train, chat with our family and friends all from our unbeatable companion our Smarthphone.
